VT Digger Dialogue: Economic Development | A Candidate Forum 11/03/2015

Moderator Mark Johnson speaks with the gubernatorial candidates Matt Dunne (D), Bruce Lisman (R), Sue Minter (D), Lt. Gov. Phil Scott (R) and Rep. Shap Smith (D) about how to strengthen Vermont's economy. Rep. Smith was not able to attend however he commented via video. This event was presented in partnership with VTDigger, Channel 17/Town Meeting Television.

In July 2015, VTDigger hosted a well-attended economic development discussion with community members about issues specific to Bennington County. The event generated so much interest that we decided to take this discussion to communities around the state.

This event is a part of an ongoing series in which we will explore how different geographic areas of the state are uniquely affected by trends in population, housing, employment, health care and other factors.

Demographic and income disparities exist within and between Bennington and Chittenden counties. Economic trends, especially since the 2008 recession, illustrate challenges unique to Vermont's rural communities and population centers. This event will open with a brief review of data trends in both counties and will feature brief economic development platforms by gubernatorial candidates.

Burlington Business Association: Public Parking Forum on Downtown Parking Plan 11/03/2015

Final plan recommendations are presented inclusive of revisions to the way public and private parking is managed in the downtown and waterfront areas. It is a culmination of a year-long process engaging residents, visitors, businesses and other stakeholders in evaluating how the City can better manage parking downtown.

Next Steps:
After the public comment period (ends November 16th), the plan will be revised and then issued as a final draft. In December, the final version of the Downtown Parking & Transportation Plan will be presented to the City Council for its acceptance.

What’s Next for Vermont’s Climate Change Economy? 10/29/2015

Area businesses and nonprofits are increasingly involved with climate change--both its challenges and opportunities. Their creative solutions are becoming a growing part of our state’s economy. The Vermont Council on Rural Development (VCRD) public forums hears from people already adapting and growing businesses that lower Vermont’s carbon impact and gathers ideas from the public on how to nurture this emerging field, include this Burlington venue.

The forums are the next step for public input to the Vermont Climate Change Economy Council. This group, formed following a statewide Summit in February, is developing a practical plan to reduce carbon emissions and stimulate green economic development in Vermont. The panelists include local business leaders and elected officials.

The Summit focused on economic development in a time of climate change, including transportation, education, investment strategies, downtown redevelopment, tourism, and efficiency. Burlington Ward 4 and Ward 7 NPA Meeting 10/28/2015

Neighborhood Planning Assemblies (NPAs) are grassroots, neighborhood organizations that were established in each of Burlington's seven Wards to empower citizen participation in City government. Working as neighborhood advocacy groups, Neighborhood Planning Assemblies facilitate communication between the citizens of Burlington and city government through regular meetings scheduled in each Ward. Wards 4 & 7 meet the third Tuesday of the month. Meeting place: Robert E. Miller Community Center 130 Gosse Court.
