From the City of Winooski:
The City of Winooski will host a groundbreaking ceremony to celebrate the start of the Main Street Revitalization project on Tuesday, May 21, 2024, 10 AM at the Winooski VFW Post 1767 located at the intersection of Main Street and Maple Street (6 Maple Street). Federal, State, and local officials, as well as Winooski community leaders, business owners, and residents are invited to join us for this momentous occasion. Statements will be followed by a group photo and a brief opportunity for press questions.
The Main Street Revitalization project is a complete rebuild of about 0.8 miles of US Route 2 & 7 between New England Central Railroad and the Colchester town line. The project aims to improve safety, accessibility, and mobility for all modes of transportation, upgrading utilities, fixing the streets and sidewalks, and maintaining an important regional connection. Driven by community feedback and the City’s Strategic Vision and Master Plan, this voter-approved infrastructure investment has finally begun since planning and public process started in 2017. Critical investment from federal, state, and local entities have brought this project to life and support Winooski's ambition to thrive as “Vermont's Opportunity City.” Visit the project website at winooskivt.gov/mainstreet for comprehensive information and view the fact sheet to learn about the project’s key personnel, cost/funding, partners, and history.
The construction of the Winooski Main Street Revitalization project is anticipated to conclude in late 2025 or early 2026. Most construction activities are anticipated to take place Monday through Friday during the daytime hours. There will be some instances of night and weekend work when necessary. Construction will typically restrict Main Street to northbound traffic only with southbound traffic detoured to Weaver Street, and there will be instances of short temporary road closures on side streets.
